Traveler's Guide

What to know before you sail

Customs & Immigration

This route crosses from the British Virgin Islands to the US Virgin Islands. You'll need a valid passport. US citizens returning from the BVI must clear US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) upon arrival in St. Thomas.

Before departing Road Town, all passengers pay a $20 BVI departure tax per person at the terminal (paid before clearing the security gate). Make sure to have cash or ask about payment options at the terminal.

Upon arrival at the Charlotte Amalie terminal, US Customs will process all passengers. Have your passport ready. US citizens without a passport can use a REAL ID-compliant photo ID plus an original or certified birth certificate, though a passport is strongly recommended.

Terminals, Crossing & Arrival

The ferry departs from the Road Town ferry terminal in downtown Tortola. The terminal is centrally located — within walking distance of the main shopping area, Pusser's Road Town Pub, and Bobby's Supermarket. If you're coming from the north shore beaches or Cane Garden Bay, allow 20–30 minutes by taxi to reach the terminal. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled departure to pay the $20 BVI departure tax and clear departure security.

The crossing to Charlotte Amalie takes approximately 45–50 minutes. Road Town Fast Ferry operates from the Road Town terminal, while other operators may also serve this route. Ferries have air-conditioned interiors with outdoor seating available on the sun deck. The open-water passage through The Narrows can be bumpy during winter months (December through April) when northerly trade winds strengthen. If you're prone to seasickness, sit toward the center of the vessel on the lower deck.

Put your phone in airplane mode during the crossing to avoid international roaming charges. Your phone will switch between BVI and USVI cell towers en route — BVI uses Flow and Digicel, which are separate from US networks and will trigger roaming fees.

You'll arrive at the Edward Wilmoth Blyden IV Marine Terminal on Veterans Drive in Charlotte Amalie. After docking, all passengers clear US Customs and Border Protection — have your passport ready and expect processing to take 10–20 minutes. The terminal is about 10 minutes from Cyril E. King Airport by taxi, making this a convenient route if you're catching a flight home. Taxis line up outside the terminal and can also take you to Red Hook (about 25 minutes) or anywhere else on the island. Downtown Charlotte Amalie shopping and restaurants are within walking distance of the terminal.
