Day Trip to Virgin Gorda

Which ferry to take, what to do, and how to plan your visit

Virgin Gorda is famous for The Baths — a stunning natural formation of giant granite boulders creating grottos, tidal pools, and hidden beaches on the island's southern tip. It's one of the top natural attractions in the Caribbean and an easy day trip from Tortola or St. Thomas.

Passport required: Virgin Gorda is in the British Virgin Islands. You'll need a valid passport and must complete the BVI Online ED Card before travel. See our full BVI entry requirements guide.

How to Get There

What to Do

The Baths are the must-see. From the Spanish Town dock, a taxi costs about $4-7 per person. The trail is now one-way — you start at the top, walk down to Devil's Bay, then go through the caves trail with the massive boulders, grottos, and tidal pools before coming back up. The loop takes about 20-30 minutes and involves some scrambling through narrow passages and over rocks (wear water shoes or sneakers, not flip-flops). The BVI National Parks Trust maintains the trail with ladders, ropes, and signage.

Spring Bay is adjacent to The Baths with similar boulder formations but fewer crowds. Free to visit and a great backup plan if The Baths are packed.

Spanish Town has restaurants, shops, and car rental near the dock if you want to explore further. The Bath and Turtle pub is a popular spot for lunch near the marina.

CocoMaya on the north shore is one of the best restaurants in the BVI — worth the taxi if you have time. Asian-Caribbean fusion right on the beach.

Copper Mine National Park on the southeast tip has ruins of a 19th-century copper mine with dramatic coastal views. A short taxi ride from Spanish Town and rarely crowded.

Best Time to Go

The Baths trail can be slippery after rain, so a dry morning is ideal. If you're coming from St. Thomas, the Saturday-only Speedy's service departs early enough to get good timing at The Baths.

Tips

Wear water shoes or sneakers for the trail through The Baths — flip-flops are dangerous on the wet boulders. Bring a waterproof bag for your phone. Go early if possible — cruise ship crowds arrive mid-morning. The trail has ladders and narrow passages; it's not accessible for all mobility levels.
